The Color Purple

For my first book, I am reading The Color Purple by Alice Walker. This book takes place during a time where women were sold and treated as property. The main character Celie gets sexually abused by her father at the age of fourteen. She then ends up pregnant with his child and he takes it and kills it. Her mother dies and leaves behind Celie and her younger sister Nettie. As she gets older, Celie grows up afraid of men. "I don't even look at mens. That's the truth. I look at women, tho, cause I'm not scared of them"(6). Her father then takes her out of sc hoo, saying that she is too "dumb" to be there and that she is wasting her time. At the age of twenty her father marries her off to a Mr.___. Once she's with him she becomes aware of another woman in his life known as Shug Avery and becomes almost infatuated with her, but you'll hear more about her as I continue reading. Celie puts his arm around him which is ironic because she attempts to love him and all her life she was raised fearing men.

This was years back, when women were labled simply as just a "thing". But its sad to say, that there still are women in today's society that are still being treated like that.

It says that because she is not afraid of women, she looks at them. And later on you say she almost becomes infatuated with Shug Avery. Does this mean she's homosexual?

Can you explain more about Celia's marriage with the mystery guy and also Shug Avery? Does Celia's father receive money for her marriage?

No problem. Shug Avery is actaully the mystery guy's lover. I find it funny because during that time period it was always women who had to obey men. But Shug Avery actaully has Mr._____ chasing after her. You see, Shug Avery is a singer who gets dresed up in all these crazy dresses and fancy jewelery and Celie looks up to her, although I highly doubt she is homosexual but i'll jeep you posted on that.

Anyways, Shug becomes sick and Mr.___ runs out and gets her and brings her back to his house. He has Celie make up the room for her and tend to her. Once Shug arrives at the house, she immediately insults Celie by saying, "You sure is ugly" (48). Which to me, seems like thats the last thing Celie needs is being insulted by someone whom she has looked up to. Well anyways, here is where the tables turn. Mr.___ loves Shug and she has hom worried because she's so sick that he actually cries for her. (50). Which is why I think Celie looks up to Shug so much; because she's not your typical black woman of that time period when women were looked at as property.

Now to answer your other question..

It doesn't say that Celie's father received money, it just explains how he married Celie off to Mr.___ because he needs a somewhat "mother" figure to take care of his kids because his wife died, but I do think that he ended up paying for her.

Ok thanks Cristina. I understand this a lot better. Interesting book so far. Is everyone African American in this book? I didn't know that until you mentioned it.
