As Lockwood recovers from his sickness, he realizes that Nelly has come to the end of her story and he now wants to move from Thrushcross.

He traveles to Wuthering Heights to tell Heathcliff of his departure and wishes that Catherine had fallen in love with him. He decided to stay another 6 months and one day decides to visit Nelly and ask about Catherine. Nelly tells him that Catherine has found someone else and cannot wait until they are married. Heathcliff finally leavs Catherine in peace. However, one night Heathcliff goes for a walk and becomes suddenly almost possessed. Once again, a supernatural event takes place and Heathcliff starts murmuring Catherine's name. He dies and Catherine and her new finace soon marry.

After all this, Lockwood feels the sudden urge to leave and does so. He ends up in the backyard among the graves of Edgar, Catherine, and Heathcliff; where it all began. People say they see Heathcliff's ghost but he seems to walk the Earth in good spirits. Creepy.

This was the most difficult book out of the bunch that I chose to read. It was good and the story plot was very intriguing but I got a few things out of it.

I believe that in this book, the motto of "Like mother, like daughter" comes into play because both Catherine and young Catherine were the obsession of two men and aty the samw time they were saiffering because of it. However, in the end, Miss Catherine ended up being happy, a luxury that her mother never had.

I also found it peculiar that when Lockwood stepped out int he backyard, he was among the graves of Catherine, Heathcliff, and Edhar, it was almost as if he was intertwined with their past just liek they were intertwined with each other, for life and death, and even after.

After Linton is taken away to Thrushcross, young Catherine is heartbroken about it and Nelly keeps tabs on Linton by asking the housekeeper about him and learns that Heathcliff is mean to him and Linton is always sick and weak. On Catherine's birthday, Catherine and Nelly go birdhunting and Catherine wanders off to Wuthering Heughts. Nelly finds her talking to Heathcliff and he mentions to her that he has a son. Catherine wants to mett him but Nelly tries to tell her that its not a good idea that she goes with him. Unble to stop her, they go to meet Linton which Catherine has no idea that it's him and it's her cousin. Heathcliff tells Nelly that he hopes they will get married and they soon start to exchange letters. Nelly finds out about this and immediately terminates their connection. Edagr becomes sick and spends less time with Catherine so Nelly takes over. One day Catherine ends up on Heathcliff's property and he sees her and demands that she vistits Linton. She goes and he begins to talk about marriage which annoys her and she pushes his chair. He then begins to whine and accuses her of assulting him. In my opinion he's alot like his father. After Nelly and Catherine leave, Nelly catches a cold. During the day Catherine takes care of her father and Nelly but at night, she travels to see Linton.

Nelly soons finds out about this and then Edgar finds out. During her story, she stops to explain to Lockwood that all this that she has just explained to him happened just a little over a year ago. Lockwood admits that he might fall in love with the young Catherine but doubts that anything will ever arise from that.

Nelly goes on to finsih her story, telling him that Linton continued to become weaker but assured them that he would be fine. Edgar's health continues to get worse and Linton is pretrified because Heathcliff is forcing him to ask for Catherine's hand in marriage and is afraid she will say no. Edgar ends up dying and is buried next to his wife. Catherine moves to Wuthering Heights and Heathcliff demands that she works for her stay. She states that they truly are in love and she takes care of Linton until he dies. After hsi death, she remains at the estate, keeping to herself.

So after Lockwood becomes sick at Wuthering Heights, he begs Nelly to continue on with her story of Heathcliff and Catherine.

So Catherine marries an Edgar Linton, even though she has secret feelings for Heathcliff and him the same for her. So one day he comes to Thrushcross Grange and when Catherine sees Heathcliff she immediately gets all excited and of course her husband notices becoming very jealous. Then her and Isabella, her sister in-law begin to visit him at Wuthering Heights and he begins to call at Thrushcross. Isabella ends up falling in love with Heathcliff even though she knows he loves Catherine but Heathcliff pays no attention to her. One day Nelly finds Heathcliff embracing Isabella and then Catherine makes him spill his guts about how he feels for Isabella. He then turns around ands tells her she has wronged him by marrying Edgar. Then Edgar and him get into a fist fight and Heathcliff leaves and Edgar then forces Catherine to pick between the two of them, she locks herself in a room an doesn't eat for a few days. After a few days Catherine basically goes crazy and talks alot botu death and mentions that her spirit will not rest until she is with Heathcliff.

Isabella then moves in with Heathcliff at his estate and this enrages Edgar. After Catherine recovers from her illness, she finds out that she is pregnant. One day when Nelly goes Heathcliff's estate to visit Isabella, Heathcliff begs Nelly to let him see Catherina, after threatening her, she finally decides to give a letter to Catherine from Heathcliff.

After giving the letter to Catherine and her and Heathcliff having a heart to heart, they finally forgive each other and she gives birth to a child named Catherin two months premature and Caherina, her mother, ends up dying and this hurts Heathcliff greatly.

Isabella then gives birth to Heathcliff's son, Linton and then moves away to London for twelve years. Heathcliff finds out where they both are but doesn't do anything about it. Isabella then dies when her son is 12 years old. Young Catherine who is now 13 years of age is smart and quick. He father, Edgar doesn't let her off Thrushcross, howveer when he learns of Isabella's death, he goes to London to retreive her son. Leaving Catherine in Nelly's hands ansd she is finally allowed to go explore and stumbles upon Wuthering Heights.
When Edgar comes back with Linton, Heathcliff comes asking for his son and Edgar agrees to bring Linton to him. When Linton arrives to Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff shows no affection towards Linton and talks adly about his mother. Linton begs to be taken back to Thrushcross but nelly leaves him there.

Ah! So sorry I haven't been posting, but I'm back!

Okay so my last book that I'm reading is called Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, the sister of Charlotte Bronte (coincidence much?) and it's about a man named Mr. Lockwood who rents out an estate from a Mr. Heathcliff who owns the large estate called Wuthering Heights. While he's there he finds out about the history of Mr. Heathcliff, the story that lies in the walls of the estate and also, a certain Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff and the passionate love that they share. The story is told through retrospect and recordings of journal entries by Mr. Lockwood. The word "wuthering" as described in the book as a "provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather" (46) which has some significance because during his stay there the weather was always bad and cold and rainy. Which in my opinion could also have something to do with the stiory itself and the events that take place.

Anyways when Mr. Lockwood first arrives to meet with Mr. Heathcliff, Heathcliff is rather rude to him and Lockwood gets a certain uneasy feel about the Wuthering Heights estate. He is invited to attend a get together one night and ends up staying in a room because he cannot get back to his apartment due to bad weather. That's when he first finds out about the name Catherine when he sees her old and dusty journals near his bedside and that night an event of the supernatural occurs where he believes he sees the ghost of Catherine or he hears something. Which I connect back to Emily's sister's novel Jane Eyre in which a supernatural event also occurs.

From then the history of the estate and its people begins to unfold. Lockwood learns of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff and a bunch of twists and ties between people.

I absolutely agree with you.

Now I just finished waching the movie version of the book. In my opinion, It wasn't that great. The beginning of the movie was the ending of the book also, alot of the parts of the book were rushed in the movie due to interest of time. If i were to choose between the movie and the book, I strongly recomment reading the book. It really is a great story.

Well, Fermina's father had arranged the marriage between her and Urbino to get her away from Florentino. During that period, young girls had to repect their fathers and all the males that had the upper hand so she really had no choice but to listen to him.

What really surprised me is that Fermina was the one who barely let out her emotions. She was very contained and that's shocking since psychologically speaking women are the ones who are more in touch with their feelings and they're the one who like to "connect more".

There was a sisterhood between her and her older cousin possibly because her mother died when she was very young and also her aunt who she would read to in the park when she was little also passed away, so she sought comfort and looked up to her older cousin.

I Finished!

In the letter Fermina wrote some of the most hurtful, horrible things a person could imagine to Florentino. But he still mistakened the letter as a token of her love. Meanwhile Fermina is heartbroken and depressed. She is grieving the loss of her husband and doesn't know what to do with herself anymore. Everything reminds her of him, so she decides to get rid of all his things by giving them away to her children in hopes that it will help her forget him and forget that he is no longer with her. She is enranged with the thought that Florentino would have the nerve to announce his love for her at the time of her husband's death and during that same time, Florentino is haunted by the thought of death.

He then decides to take America, the 14 year old out for some icecream and he then tells her that he wants to get married. Well she laughs and says that old men don't get married. After he reads Fermina's letter he writes back apologizing and then sher writes back apologizing to him too. So I guess they're back on good terms.

But America becomes jealous that Florentino no longer wants to be involved with her and swears to track down the other woman but then she backs off and finally accepts his rejection of her.

A year after Urbino's death, Florentino goes to his memorial and Fermina is happy to see him. She seeks comfort in reading his letter because it lightens up her grief.

For two weeks Florentino doesn't write to Fermina but one day he shows up at her house unexpectedly. She lets him in but he suddenly becomes sick and he leaves. The next day he sends her a letter apologizing for what had happened. She accepts and tells him to come back whenever he wants. The next week he comes back and talks about their past, she gets mad and asks him to leave. He comes back the following week once again brings up their past but this time she laughs and they both blush.

However Fermina's kids have a different opinion of Florentino and Ofelia her daughter doesn't like him. One day Florentino falls and breaks his ankle and has to stay in bed for a few weeks. He is then worried that he might die before geting better and before seeing Fermina once again. They still communicate through letters and she then realizes how much she misses him.

Once he's better he invites Fermina to go on a cruise with him on a sboat, she happily accepts excited to finally get out of her house. Once they're on the boat. she suddenly feels sad and wants to cry so Florentino gives her her space. She then suggest that they go to deck and she continues to cry. He asks if he should leave her alone but she insists that he stays. When they are about to come back on land, Florentino then has this idea and makes the captain wave the flag of cholera. Because everyone thinks that the ship is infested with cholera, no one lets them come into any of the ports. Which means that the only place for them is on the ship out on the open water, ans that's where they choose to remain.

This book was long but it truly was a beautiful story. What interests me is that usually the women are the ones who are so intact with their emotions and they're the ones who hold on to sentiments like this, but in this case, it was the man who did it and I found that so sweet.

Anyways, on my recent trip to Blockbuster, I noticed that the movie version is finally out and available to rent so I can't wait to watch it because I have so many images in my head from reading the book that I'm excited to visualize it, so I'll get back to you soon!

Monday, March 24, 2008

To celebrate the century, Fermina and Urbino take the first ride in the hot air balloon. She wants to go visit her city where she grew up in but cant because it is infested with cholera. Anyways, when she comes back, Florentino sees Fermina's reflection in a mirror at an inn and ends up buying the mirror as to preserve her reflection forever. He then watches her for over a year. He wataches her house, where he never sees her at and he also looks for her at mass but he never sees her there either. He has no idea where she could be.

Well the reason for her disappearance is this: She decided to go stay with her cousin on the ranch for some time because she discovered an unsual scent on her husband's clothing and thinks he is having an affair. So she leaves quietly, without a scandal and they only discuss formally about their children.

Well her suspicions were right. She pokes around in his office but finds no trace of an affair. She then deicdes to confront him. Now that Urbino knows that his wife is on to something, he immediately ends his affair with a 27- year old Barbara Lynch. He tells Fermina that he feels as if he is going to die and she responds with, "It may be for the better". He finally ends up confessing to her, telling her everything, and she of course is in rage.

She then leaves for her cousin's house and after some time. Urbino goes after her, well Fermina forgives him, goes back with him, but makes him pay for the pain he has caused her. Then Floretino sees Fermina one day and decides he must renounce his love for her. It then occurs to himn that Fermina might die beofe him so he has to do something quick. He is then promoted both president and manager of his company and decides that he can love more than one person without being unfaithful. So he calls up this girl who is a prostitute and ends up paying for love; something he promised he would never do.

He then floats over to another girl; 14 year old America Vicuna. One day he hears bells signaling a funeral. When asked who had passed, he found out it was Urbino. He didn't feel good about this as he thought he would but rather scared because it dawned on him that it could've been him. He goes back to Fermina and once again promises her his ever lasting love. He then makes himself sick over all this stress and one night he finds a letter from Fermina in a puddle outside of his house.

I wonder what it says..

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Once Floretino sees Fermina on her return from Europe, in her 6th month of pregnancy, he made it his life long goal that he ewas going to get her, sooner or later, and for that to happen, Dr. Urbino had to die. But not in a violent way, Florentino made up his mind that he was going to wait, even if it meant waiting for a lifetime.

Florentino starts working as a poet in the market place. Meanwhile, his mother redid the whole house in preparation for Fermina's arrival but came down with a disease. Florentino on the other hand, started bringing different women to different places; clearly he's breaking down from everything that's going on around him. He meets a woman, Auscensia Santander and he ends falling in love with her house. Anyways she's married but that doesnt stop them from having an affair for seven years. One day while they were laying in bed together at her house, Florentino heard a noise and when she went up to go look, everything in the house had been stolen. On the wall was a message: That's what you get for messing around". Blackmail; whoever did it knew what she was up to. Her husband thought it strange that she never reported the robbery. He then meets another woman by the name of Leona. he almost begins to tell her about Fermina when Dr. Urbino takes cover in his office from a cyclone. Florentino knows who Urbino is but Urbino doesn't have a clue. Florentino then realizes that they are both the victims of the same thing; Fermina. Urbino is the only many that understands the love that Florentino feels for Fermina because he feels it to. But there's competiton.

I wonder what's going to happen..

Monday, March 17, 2008

I now know the connection between Dr. Urbino and the rest of the story! Remember that arranged marriage that Fermina's father had set up for her? Well he's the lucky guy. But this chapter is written in retrospect so we'll start from the beginning.

So a young Dr. Urbino just stepped off the boat from Paris where he had continued his studies in medicine and surgery. Handsome-looking guy, had all the chicks drooling over him too. He comes back to his hometown, to find it in shambles. His father had died from cholera, which if you don't know what that is, because I sure don't, it's an illness caused by bacteria that infects the intestinal system of the body. So anyways, his father had died of that when he was in Paris. Anyways he comes back home and makes his daily rounds to his patients. He then paid a house visit to take Fermina's pulse one day, kind of like a check-up. He then gave her a compliment and when Fermina heard her friends giggle, she got angry and slammed the door in his face. Her father had heard what happened so he made her apologize to Dr. Urbino and invited him in for a drink. He would talk about his daughter, showing her off and basically trying to fix them two up. But Fermina was still devastated because this was after all that had happened with Florentino; she was still grieving. However, the arranged marriage was set. When Floretino heard the news of Fermina engaged to a doctor, he was devastated, in fact so devastated that he began to sleep with a widow for 6 months.

So now, we know what chapter one is all about. But I still want to know why Dr. Urbino had killed himself.. was it because of Fermina or something else?

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Lol okay thanks for clearing that up because I have more to add to the last post.

So anyways they continue this system of secret letters and they end up falling in love for each other. Florentino then decides to stand outside at night and serenaede her with a violin solo. A war breaks out and he is put in prison because he is believed to be a spy. Florentino then asks for her hand in marriage and she accepts. Meanwhile, Fermina's father finds out about their secret love and then tries and talks to Florentino and then to Fermina. To try and split them up, he takes Fermina on a trip to her cousin's house where they spend a year and a half traveling. By that time he figures that Fermina has forgotten about Florentino and sets up an arranged marriage for her for when they return. When they return, Florentino spots her and follows her as she shops around but when he confronts her, she bascially tell him to forget it. But he waits, he waits for 51 years, 9 months, and 4 days where he offers his eternal love for her once again, now that she's a widow.
It's a good book, just kind of confusing, but I deffinitly recommend it. Well I'm not sure, maybe there could be a connection between cyanide and love, something like love is poisonous? Because he did mention that this was the first suicide that Dr. Urbino has seen that had nothing to do with love and it seemed that Armour's mistress had been faithful to him so hopefully that will all be cleared up later in the book.

As I've continued my reading, I've been introduced to the main characters, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. These two were involved in a troubled love affair which had ended fifty one years ago. And Florentino still thinks about her to this day. The way they met was Florentino was working for a Germain immigrant who taught him Morse Code (which I have no idea what that is) but anyways that adds to his mysterious character and all the girls in his social circle practically drool over him. But one day, he sees Fermina, who was in the park reading to her aunt and he fell head over heels for her. He goes home and writes this immense love letter and is panning to give it to Fermina. But his mother gives him the advice to hold back some for he might scare her and come off as an obsessed stalker, so he waits. Meanwhile, Fermina notices him and her aunt tells her that the only reason why he won't come over to them is because she's there and that she predicts he will send Fermina a letter (which is strange). So one day, Fermina is sitting by herself on the park bench when Florentino comes along and offers the letter but she says she can't take it without her father's permission. He insists she takes it so she tells him to come by the park everyday and wait until she changes her seat. One day she does so and he gives her the note again, but it wasn't the big long letter that he was planning on giving her before, instead it was a simple half page note in which he expresses his love and everlasting fidelity. She then tells him to leave and not come back until she tells him to.

So, here's what I'm wondering..

1) How does the whole Dr. Urbino play into this and

2) By the way Fermina reacted to his letter, did she ever love him back?

Monday, February 25, 2008

I've just started my new book; Love in the Time of Cholera. It's a beautiful story about one man's life-long devotion to the love of his life and how all the many forms of love are threaded throughout this book.

So far in my reading, I've read about a Dr. Juvenal Urbino who examines the body of dead friend and very competetive chess player, Jeremiah de Saint Armour who committed suicide by inhaling cyanide vapors. However, in all the cases of suicides by cyanide he has seen, this is the first one that has "not been triggered by a torturous love". He then arranges for Armour to be buried the same afternoon as one of his medical students' silver anniversary, even though Armour is an athiest. He had found a letter in Armour's handwriting speaking about his secret lover and directions leading Urbino to a safe in which there was enough money to pay for the funeral. Armour planned his suicide. He swore to never get old so he he committed suicide at the age of 60. When Urbino met with his secret lover, she told me that she knew was Armour was planning all along and that she had nearly defeated him at his last chess game. Sound confusing? Well, this book is written in a way in which most of the content in chapter one will be explained more in depth later in the story. So how does this all tie in with lorentino Ariza and Fermina Diaz, which the story is actually about? We'll find out..

I just watched the movie version of the book. They did a pretty good job with the movie; it was pretty relevant to the book. However, they left out some parts in the interest of time such as towards the end of the book, when Mary was still alive and the Lisbon family then octioned off the things in their house, but other than that it was a pretty good movie I'd have to say. Of course the book is so much better because it's in better detail and you the imagery is alot better so I suggest reading the book first before watching the movie.

I finished!!

Mary was the last sister still hanging by a string. Therese, Lux, and Bonnie were gone. It was like the same scene was put on repeat. The paramedis knew the routine like the backs of their hands; they didn't even bother to knock, they just went right now. Mrs. Lisbon had nothing to say and the neighborhood didn't bother to crowd around and watch what was happening; they already knew. Soon after, Mr. Lisbon put the house up or sale and while he, his wife, and his only remianing daughter stayed at a hotel room, he asked one of the english teachers at the school to come and get rid of everything in the house because it was too painful for them do it themselves.

After everything was taken out of the house and octioned off, Mr. Lisbon and his family came back to their house to stay at until their new house was ready. Everyone wondered how they were able to carry on and continue doing normal, everyday things. One day, the EMT truck returned to the Lisbon residence for the last time; Mary had overdosed on sleeping pills. The people of the nieghborhood still don't know why the Lisbon sisters killed themselves. They believe that Cecilia killed herself because she was a misfit and the other side was calling her and then the sisters killed themselves because Cecilia was calling them but they don't know if that's entirely true. No one will ever know.

This just about sums up the book. The idea of suicide is very complex. Other people looking in from the outside have no idea why people do it. Especially since suicide is more common amongst girls than it is guys; the girl's mind is compex enough, and then when they go and commit suicide, it throws everything off completely. This book was good, I didn't like it as much as the first one I've read but Euginidis did a great job with the plot and conveying the idea of nothing is ever what it seems. I will soon be watching the motion picture version of the film with Kiersten Dunst to compare so hopefully they did a good job with the movie. Stay tuned!

Saturday, January 26, 2008

Okay so, after homecoming, Mrs. Lisbon, takes all four of her daughters out of school; she thought that they needed time to heal at home. In return, Lux, starts sneaking men in her house of all different ages to sleep with them on the roof. She would tell them thats it's okay, that "it would make us feel close". Which is a common behavior among young women to seek comfort and belonging in men, because they don't know how else to cope with their feelings and they feel wanted and protected. Pretty soon, Lux was the next one sent to the hospital due to stomach pains and later on was discovered to have been faking them just so she could get out of her house and get a pregnancy test. Except this time, Mrs. Lisbon didn't ride in the ambulance with her, nor did her sisters come out and see her off. It was as if they have gotten used to the routine since it was the second time that this was happening. After the doctor sat down with her, it was clear that she was in deep denial of Cecilia's death.

After her return from the hospital and her pregnancy test being declared negative, Mr. Lisbon ends up losing his job which adds to more stress on the Lisbon family. All the boys that are obsessed with the Lisbon sisters are on watch 24/7 to see what their next moves are and brag to the girls that they have a car and can take them where ever they want to go. One night, the girls invited them over, told them to wait in the living room while they all finished packing. After waiting for some time the boys see a light in the basement and decide to go see what it is. When they went down there, they saw, Bonnie, one of the sisters, hanging, dead from a beam. They later learned that Mary then killed herself by putting her head in the oven, Therese, overdosed on sleeping pills, and Lux, from carbon monxide poisoning. Lux had a plan alla long; to stall the boys for long enough while each of the sisters committed suicide. I guess they couldn't deal with the loss of their sister, and how everything had turned wrong.

Monday, January 14, 2008

Well, I think Euginidis made Cecilia die first because each girl has their own personality, which makes them very different from each other. Cecilia was the sister who was quiet, drawn back from the group, and mostly kept to herself, she always wore this vintage style wedding dress and was very in-touch with herself mentally, but she never expressed herself much to anyone else, and that may have caused her to end her life so soon. I think that Euginidis picked such a touchy subject to write about because it shows that in this world, nothing is ever what it sees. In everyone's eyes the Lisbon sisters seemed like normal teenagers, and then one day, Cecilia goes and kills herself. This subject is also reflected on females most of the time because the female species tend to indulge in their emotions alot more than males do. Sometimes, they are lost in a whirlpool of their emotions and they don't know how to cope with it, especially during their teenage years when already they are facing alot of stress with trying to fit in and finding themselves.

Moving on...

So, after the suicide, the Lisbon household was quiet, very solemn. Everyone continued on with their routines almost robotically. School started again and the girls walked side by side ignoring the looks and stares from their peers and blocking out the whispers behind their backs as they passed by. They each were having trouble dealing with the loss of their sister, but Lux, the second to youngest sister dealt with the loss in a way that stuck out to me; she would often hang around a motorcycle gang and, "One biker asked her to go for a ride, and after looking in the direction of her house more than ten miles away, she accepted. She hugged his waist. He kicked the machine into life. Later, Lux was seen walking home alone, carrying her shoes. This type of behavior among young girls is common, especially when they are dealing with tough situations. The fact that she looked in the direction her house and then agreed to going with the guy showed that at that time, home wasn't comforting and welcoming for her, so she sought the comfort and welcome of someone else; a man. Most girls usually seek older men as comfort becase they feel safe and wanted when they are going through hard situations. As time passes, a boy, by the name of Trip Fontaine, who was one of the most adored boys in their school, developed an attraction towards Lux, however, she barely noticed him which drove him crazy because he never had to chase after a girl before. But I have a feeling that all the spotlight on Lux is going to cause her to end up the same way as Cecilia...
